About Rajamaa

Rajamaa AB
Rajamaa is a family business run by the Malmström family since the start in 1986. It is situated on an island in the River Muonio, the river that unites Sweden with Finland. The name of the island is Pitkäsaari (Long Island), and the village is Muonionalusta. It has seven inhabitants, of which Kaisu and Lars are two. From time to time our grown up children are helping us, and have done so all their childhood. Except the family here is also working the caretaker Henning and, of course, guides, depending on season. The daily language among the staff is Finnish, which is the language of the valley. Rajamaa consists of a main building, with reception, dining-room and sauna. We have 5 smaller chalets of 25 sqm, with 2 beds and 5 bigger ones of 46 sqm with two small bed-rooms with 2 beds each. All chalets are equipped with shower/WC, mini-kitchen and electrical drying closet. In our prices are always included bed-linen and towels.

As the name Muonionalusta indicates, the island lies below Muonio. Muonio is, besides the name of the river, also the main village in the Finnish community with the same name, and the big rapids that are to be seen and heard from the island. In wintertime the river is of course frozen, and then one can only imagine the rapids under the thick ice. The eastern part of the island holds no buildings, and in most directions from Rajamaa, You may walk quit long before You see any traces of civilization. Something unique in Western Europe. That is why eight out of ten guests at Rajamaa comes from outside Scandinavia. When You leave the chalet, the wilderness begins, so our programs at Rajamaa are close to nature. Walking, on tour skies or carrying a fly rod, no matter what activity You are doing, the nature experience is always important.

At Rajamaa there are guest during all time of the year. The summer season starts in the middle of June and during the summer many fishermen come here. We also have activity-weeks, with trekking, canoe and mountain-bike. Special weeks for families with children and other activities are also on the menu. In the end of September, the last trekkers have left and we take a break, only to open again in the end of October. During a month clubs and national teams in cross-country skiing and biathlon come here to train on the well known tracks of Muonio. At Christmas the winter season starts and goes all the way to the end of April, when we take a break again.
